Cosmetic Restoration of a Tooth Might Require a Porcelain Crown

Posted .

When a tooth in your smile is affected by visual imperfections, like a small chip, a noticeable filling, or discolored tooth enamel, it can affect your self-esteem. Many people with a tooth like this will reach out to Drs. Openko and Dedola to explore their options for improving the cosmetic value of their smile. In some of these cases, they will recommend a restoration with a porcelain dental crown. This is an even more likely restoration if the tooth has a pre-existing cavity.

This process involves removing the existing tooth enamel layer to create an abutment. This leaves behind the healthy dentin layer within the tooth.

With this completed, Drs. Openko and Dedola will start the process of creating a dental crown. This is a replica of the original tooth enamel made in a dental lab. The special dental-grade porcelain material the technicians use can be shaded to match the surrounding teeth.

Then our dentists will create a detailed impression of the abutment and any corresponding teeth. The impression will be sent to a dental lab where the porcelain crown will be custom made. Then a temporary crown will be secured over the abutment to protect it.

We will call you back in for a follow-up appointment when your porcelain crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and your new crown will be cemented onto the abutment with a strong dental adhesive.

If you live in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area and you have an unappealing tooth in your smile, you should call 412.885.5590 to set up an appointment at our dental office.
